Madrid was the destination for 27 year 9 and 10 students and three staff members from The Leigh and Wilmington academies this year. This is the third time the schools have travelled together.
Spanning 4 days the students left school at 4 am on Friday, 22nd June and were soon at Gatwick airport. After a smooth flight to Madrid we checked into our city centre hotel and began the visit with a walking tour of the city. Following this and a typical Spanish evening meal of paella, some chose to relax at the accommodation and others returned to see more of the city.
On Saturday and Monday students spent the mornings at a specialist language school for some Spanish lessons. These were practical and allowed students to practise useful, transactional vocabulary as well as learning some new language games and songs.
Other visits and activities during our stay included a very interesting visit to the bull ring where we saŵ and heard about the history and theatre of bull fighting with an enthusiastic and informative guide. Many of us found this thought provoking. We also visited the Prado museum, the Cibeles fountain, the stunning El Retiro park and the highlight for many, the Bernabeu stadium, home of Real Madrid.
Students really enjoyed the visit and coped well with the heat. Thanks to Miss Picazo, Miss Fernandez and Mr Dearsley for organising the visit. Spain 2019 is already being planned!
