Year 11 and 12 students, and their parents and carers, from The Leigh Academy, The Leigh UTC, Longfield Academy and Wilmington Academy were invited to attend a ‘Post 18 Options Evening’ on Tuesday 17th July.
Hosted by The Leigh Academy in Dartford, the event brought together a wide variety of employers, to speak directly to students about the career opportunities they offer. Leicester University were on hand to give information about the application process and how to choose the most suitable course at University, as well as delivering informative talks about personal statements and student finance. There was also a presentation from Bragfolder, a platform that allows students to create a free online portfolio of their achievements and experiences, which is designed to help students to craft their UCAS personal statements and showcase themselves to potential employers. A talk on degree apprenticeships was enthusiastically attended and Pathway CTM were available to talk about employability/insight days, peer to peer mentoring and a unique student portal that gives students access to valuable resources and information regarding school-leaver options.
Leicester University – talking about applications, courses, personal statements & finance.
Nicola Stokes from EY – talking about careers in finance.
Oyster Worldwide – talking about gap year activities & Adam Duffy talking about Brag Folder.
Ilona Hurrell from Rochester Bridge Trust – talking about a career in civil engineering.
Mark Landon from Weightmans – talking about a career in Law.

Despite a small turnout, engagement was high, with students and parents participating in meaningful conversations with positive outcomes, such as a student pursuing a career in law being offered work experience, a student and parent finding out about their joint desire to teach and a student being offered a workplace visit to help her with a potential creative career.
Students and parents were positive about the experiences they had participated in, with one Wilmington Academy parent commenting
“That was really useful. Thank you.”
All participating delegates reported a good level of participation and expressed a keen interest in repeating the experience.
“I hope we inspired one or two students to become engineers and provided direction to a few more.”
“It was an absolute pleasure to be involved and our audience was very engaged. We look forward to getting involved in future events!”
“We had some great conversations and our employer partners were happy.”
“Thanks for inviting me; it was a pleasure to be there”
We would like to express our thanks to all the delegates for attending and inspiring our students and their families.
