Module 3 Update

Dear Parents/Carers,

Following on from the Prime Minister’s announcement on 4th January 2021, all schools are closed for the majority of students, from today until Monday 22nd February at the earliest.

Although this was not entirely unexpected, I can imagine that it will have caused much anxiety and disruption to you and your children, particularly for students in Year 11 and 13.

The Prime Minister said that ‘not all’ examinations will take place this summer.  We don’t yet have any further clarification on this.  Until we do it is vital that ALL students continue with their planned learning for all subjects on a daily basis.  If your child is due to take a BTEC examination this month, we believe that they will still be taking place and your child should continue to revise as before.  I will write a further letter to Year 11 and Year 13 students over the next couple of days.  The immediate message though is keep going! We are here to support you and we will do all that we can to ensure that you will get the outcomes that you deserve this summer.

At The Leigh Academy we are well prepared for online learning and we remain as always committed to supporting your child through this next period of remote learning.  This morning you will have received a letter with all the reminders and details about accessing learning from home.

I am also writing with great sadness to share the news of the death of a member of our Leigh community from Covid-19.  Sue Blackston, who has worked at The Leigh Academy for 29 years as part of our team of catering staff.  Sue and her children also attended The Leigh City Technology College, or The Downs School as it was previously known.  Sue’s smiling welcome in our restaurant every day will be greatly missed by staff and students alike.  Our thoughts are with Sue’s family at this sad time.

As always, our network of staff are on hand to support your children throughout this time and if you or your child needs any emotional or pastoral support then please contact your child’s Student Service Manager in the first instance.

If your child needs any general help with accessing their work then please contact their form tutor via email.  For subject specific queries please contact the subject teacher.

We hope we will be able to welcome all students back in February.  I will write regularly with further updates as needed.

Stay safe.

Yours faithfully,

Julia Collins
