Reopening of Academy Update

Dear Parents/Carers

Following on from my letter yesterday I am now writing with further details regarding our Covid-19 asymptomatic testing schedule and return to the academy plans.

Covid-19 Testing Schedule

As you know, following the DfE guidance, students must be tested on site 3 times, with each test between 3 and 5 days apart.  The logistics of doing this means that we will be testing between 8am and 4pm for 13 days!  Therefore, I ask for and appreciate your support and patience as we transition your child and all of our Leigh community gradually back to onsite working and learning.

The majority of students’ first tests will take place on site from Wednesday 3rd March to Friday 5th March, students will have their test and then go straight home.  If your child tests positive we will call you later on the same day.  Your child and your household must then self-isolate for 10 days from the date of the test.  You may wish to book a PCR test but the guidance states that this is not required.  If your child receives a negative test result you will receive a text or email with the result on the same day.

Post-16 students will register their tests themselves via a QR code on their mobile phone and will therefore receive a text from the NHS with their result.  Alternatively, we can register for Post-16 students, as per the other year groups.  We will also contact parents of Post-16 students if there is a positive test result.

Year 7 will have their first test in the week beginning 8th March – see more details below

It is really important that students follow the above schedule, to ensure the smooth flow of the day.  Students should only need to be on site for a maximum of 30 minutes and will then be able to go home.  It is also really important that students maintain 2 metres social distance from others to and from school and when in school.  The very last thing I want to be doing on those days is calling you to say that your child has been in contact with a friend who has tested positive and must therefore self-isolate and not return to school the following week.  We will monitor this closely in school on these testing days but please do impress upon your child the importance of this.

Students must also wear face coverings/masks and will be asked to use hand sanitizer on entry and at various points of the testing process.  Students may wear their own clothes on these testing days.

Please consider driving your children to and from school on these days or for them to walk.  If your child must use public transport then please remind them to follow the relevant safety guidance.

Please find attached a testing leaflet, that I would ask that you read through with your child before their test.  School staff will be on hand to support, reassure and guide students.

Return to School – From Monday 8th March

Students will return to school from Monday 8th March, with a staggered return through the week.  This will ensure that students can be fully supported on their gradual return and will mean that the majority of students will be able to have two Covid tests before their full return to lessons, thus taking as many steps to mitigate risk as much as possible.

Students will return to The Leigh Academy on the days as noted below.  On their first day, the timings for arrival will be different to usual.  Each year group will receive a letter at the start of next week with their timings.

The aim is to get students safely back into face to face learning in the classroom as soon as possible, but also as safely as possible.

  • Monday 8th March
    Yr 7,8, 9, 10 & 12 continue with remote learning at home
Yr 11 & 13 in school – second Covid test and lessons
  • Tuesday 9th March
Yr 7,8,9 continue with remote learning at home
Yr 10 & 12 – second Covid test and lessons
Yr 11 & Yr 13 full day of timetabled lessons
  • Wednesday 10th March
Yr 7 continue with remote learning at home
Yr 8 & 9 second Covid test and lessons
Yr 10,11,12 & 13 full day of timetabled lessons
  • Thursday 11th March
Yr 7 first Covid test and lessons
Yr 8,9,10,11,12 & 13 full day of timetabled lessons
  • Friday 12th March
All students in school following usual timings and full timetable

Remaining second and third Covid tests on site will take place within the school day from Friday 12th to Friday 19th March

Students in school from Monday 8th to Wednesday 10th March will need to bring packed lunches to the academy.  The academy restaurant will open for all from Thursday 11th March.

Remote learning

From Wednesday 5th March through until your child is back in school lessons, remote learning will continue following your child’s timetable as usual.  During this time, staff will be facilitating the testing process on site and preparing for the return of students to school so all work continues, but without the live aspect.  Students will soon be having actual ‘live’ lessons in the classroom, which is what we are all working towards with your support and students’ cheerful co-operation.

I thank you for your support and patience through this period of transition and look forward to welcoming your children back to school soon.

Yours faithfully

Julia Collins | Principal
