Covid-19 Home Testing

Dear Parent/Carer and Year 11, 12 and 13 Student,

The DFE guidance for schools reopening this March, asked schools to give every student the opportunity for three on school site Covid-19 lateral flow tests, before rolling out home testing to students.  The aim of this is to help reduce the spread of Covid-19 in schools and (along with our other measures) to help all students learn in, as safe an environment as possible.

Year 11, 12 and 13 will have completed their 3rd cycle of on-site testing by the end of this week and be ready to start home testing in the week commencing 15th March.

In tutor time or lessons on Monday, students in these year groups will be asked to go to LAT Covid-19 Home Testing Portal and watch the NHS training video on how to complete and process a lateral flow test at home.  Students will then be asked to fill in a google form to confirm that they have watched the video and will carry out the testing at home.

We will then distribute a pack of 7 home Covid-19 lateral flow testing kits to each student to take home.  Students are asked to carry out two Covid-19 tests each week.  The plan for this is:-

Year 13

  • Watch video, sign declaration and collect kit from Post-16 Reception with block A and B teachers on Monday 15th
  • First home test on Tuesday 16th
  • Second home test on Saturday 20th
  • Third home test on Wednesday 24th
  • Thereafter, home tests every Sunday and Wednesday.

Year 12

  • Watch video, sign declaration and collect kit from Post-16 Reception with block C and D teachers on Tuesday 16th
  • First home test on Tuesday 16th
  • Second home test on Saturday 20th
  • Third home test on Wednesday 24th
  • Thereafter, home tests every Sunday and Wednesday.

Year 11

  • Watch video and sign declaration in tutor time on Monday 15th
  • Home Test kits given out on Tuesday 16th
  • First home test on Wednesday 17th
  • Second home test on Sunday 21st
  • Thereafter, home tests every Wednesday and Sunday.

Each test result (whether positive, negative or void) must be uploaded to the NHS, this can be done via report your test result online .  If the result is negative, then students continue to attend the academy as usual.  If the result is void, students should repeat the test.

If the result is positive, then the student should self-isolate, contact The Leigh Academy to let us know and book a PCR test to confirm the result.  This can be done by calling 119 or via this PCR test booking .

If students are unable to complete testing at home then we are looking to be able to continue to staff a small on-site Covid-19 testing centre.  If you think that you would like your child to continue testing in the academy, please fill in this form testing in the academy.

Home Testing for Families, Households and Support Bubbles of school age children

It is also now possible for families of school age children to have home testing kits too.  The tests given to students by the academy should only be used by the student themselves.  Families have several ways to obtain their own testing kits:

  • Collection – You can collect home test kits at a local collection point Find your nearest home test kit collection point Each pack contains 7 tests.  Anyone 18 or over can collect.  The nearest collection point to The Leigh Academy is Acacia Car Park, which is open from 1.30pm – 7.00pm.   You can check online if the location is open or busy before you go.  You do not need to make an appointment.  Do not visit a collection point outside opening hours, as it may be used to test people with coronavirus symptoms outside these times.
  • Order Home Test Kits Online – If you are unable to go and collect test kits, you can order a home test kit online Order rapid lateral flow home test kits for delivery  Do not order online if you can get a test through other methods. This frees up home delivery for those who need it most.

A Note of Caution

It is important to note that a negative result does not mean that the student can relax or ignore social distancing in public or the virus prevention measures in the academy intended to reduce transmission.  Students will remain in their year group ‘bubbles’, be asked to wash their hands, use hand sanitiser and continue to wear face masks when inside the building, including in lessons until the DFE/PHE guidance changes.  The lateral flow testing is an additional tool that contributes to reducing the risk to each student and to our whole community.
