Following on from the letters sent home for Mrs Collins last week, I wanted to write to you all and go through the Year 11 specific details for your child’s Covid 19 testing and return to school plan.
I am really looking forward to having all of Year 11 back in school with us for face to face education and I hope that your child is looking forward to coming back too.
As always, change does sometimes bring with it anxiety and I want to assure you and your child that we will continue to do everything we can to ensure The Leigh Academy is as safe as possible, as well as delivering high quality Teaching and Learning.

Students will come into school for their Covid test and then go straight home. Students can wear their own clothes and should also wear a face covering/mask. They will enter via main reception and line up in the PE corridor before going into the sports hall which has been transformed into our Covid testing centre. We have been testing on site throughout January and we have a trained team of staff ready to support every child to carry out their Covid test.
A reminder that Year 11 students can complete the consent forms themselves, and thank you to those who have done so already.
After students have had 3 Covid tests in school, students will then be asked to test twice weekly at home. Further details re home testing will be set out after 8th March.
Thursday 4th and Friday 5th March. Year 11 students remain at home, completing remote learning set in the google classrooms.
Return to School – Monday 8th March
Year 11 will return to school on Monday 8th of March. On this day all Year 11 students will have Covid Test 2, wait for their results and then go into school for the remainder of the day. Students will have an extended tutor time session upon their return to school in order to support their wellbeing and discuss their academic progress since working at home.
The schedule for Monday 8th March is as follows:
9.00am: Chaucer students arrive, complete Covid test 2, wait for the result, and then (assuming it’s negative) go to tutor time and online learning sessions until 1.30pm. They will have a break at 11.00am for 30 minutes, lunch at 1.30pm for 30 minutes, and have period 5 and tutor time as per their normal timetable.
10.00am: Darwin students arrive, complete Covid test 2, wait for the result, and then (assuming it’s negative) go to tutor time and online learning session until 1.30pm. They will have lunch at 1.30pm for 30 minutes, and have period 5 and tutor time as per their normal timetable.
11.00am: Brunel students arrive, complete Covid test 2, wait for the result, and then (assuming it’s negative) go to tutor time and online learning session until 1.30pm. They will have lunch at 1.30pm for 30 minutes, and have period 5 and tutor time as per their normal timetable.
12.00pm: Da Vinci students arrive, complete Covid test 2, wait for the result, and then (assuming it’s negative) go to tutor time until 2.00pm. They will then have period 5 and tutor time as per their normal timetable.
Students in DV 12 are a mixture of colleges as they are the separate science higher tier group. They should all arrive at 12.00pm as per the Da Vinci time slot.
Lessons on Tuesday 9th of March
All students should arrive on the tennis courts by 8.50am ready for a 9.00am start. Due to the staggered return of Year groups throughout the week, the Year 11 timetable will look different on Tuesday, due to the fact that many of their teachers will need to be with their tutor groups in other years upon their return.
The timetable for Tuesday will be as follows:
|9.00am – 11.00am
Chaucer / Darwin will have Science, Brunel / Da Vinci will have Mathematics
|11.00am – 11.30am
|11.30am – 1.30pm
Chaucer / Darwin will have English, Brunel / Da Vinci will have Science
|1.30pm – 2.00pm
|2.00pm – 3.00pm
All students follow their normal period 5 timetable
|3.00pm – 3.30pm
All students in tutor time
Due to the fact that PE lessons have been replaced for this one-off occasion, students should wear their full academy uniform, rather than their PE kit. They will be advised of which room to go to for their lessons by their tutor on Monday.
Year 11 will then have Test 3 in school on Friday 12th of March – this will take place throughout the day and will not affect the start or end time of their school day.
From the 8th of March, all students will need to be in full academy uniform, following our usual high expectations with natural colour hair and no artificial nails and only one pair of earrings. Please spend this week ensuring that your child is fully prepared and equipped for learning. The academy restaurant will be fully open from Thursday 11th March so please ensure that your child has a packed lunch, snacks, a bottle of water for the days when they are in school before then. They will also be expected to bring their Chromebook into school each day, fully charged and will be responsible for their device. Students will be using Chromebooks in lessons to support their learning and to access applications and software used in digital classroom tasks.
Upon return to the academy, we will be following the recommended guidance and asking students to continue to wear face masks, including during lessons and at any point where social distancing cannot be maintained. We encourage students to also bring a spare mask and a plastic bag to keep their mask in when eating or not in use. If your child is medically exempt from wearing a face mask then we can provide a clear visor which may be more appropriate. Please ensure all medical exemption evidence is shared with your child’s Student Service Manager via email to email@example.com.
A letter was shared with you yesterday giving more information on how GCSE and BTEC grades are to be determined this year in light of the government’s decision to cancel the GCSE and BTEC examinations. We are currently planning the timeline for Year 11 from their return to school on Monday, through to results day on Thursday the 12th of August. As soon as this is complete, we will share it with you so we can continue to work together in ensuring the best outcomes possible for your child.
Thank you for your patience and support as we return to the academy. If you have any queries, please do not hesitate to contact any of the Year 11 team.
