Mid-Module 4 Update

A group of Leigh Academy students are photographed sitting together at their desks, looking at their laptops and smiling.

Dear Parents/Carers,

Following on from the letter from the LAT CEO Simon Beamish on 23rd of February 2022, I am writing with a Leigh Academy specific update. Since our return to Module 4, we have had very few COVID cases among students or staff and we are feeling optimistic that we are at last able to return to more usual ways of working at The Leigh Academy.

This term we have been able to have in person college assemblies again which is so important to reinvigorate our ‘small school’ college model ensuring that students feel a sense of belonging and identity. It is lovely to also hear the ‘buzz’ amongst students as they research college figureheads. The most successful tutor groups will be presenting to me next week and following governor’s approval, I hope to then be able to share new college figurehead names with parents and students by the end of the term.

Last week we also had our Year 9 options evening. I was delighted to be able to invite Year 9 parents into the academy and meet with senior leaders and teaching staff in person. It was such a lovely atmosphere and such a useful evening to meet with parents to work in partnership with us to support our young people as they make important decisions as they move from Key Stage 3 to Key Stage 4.

I am looking forward to inviting Year 11 and Year 13 parents into the academy for the Parent/Teacher subject meetings soon.

Year 11 Parent/Teacher Evening will be on Wednesday 23rd March 2022 from 2:30pm – 7pm.

Year 13 Parent/Teacher Evening will be on Thursday 31rd March 2022 from 3:30pm – 7pm.

Letters with further details will follow, but please do ‘save the date’.

Students last week also benefited from World Book Day discussions with teachers sharing their favourite books with students, as well as careers week presentations. We have Comic Relief events planned as well as the 10X business challenge projects. It is wonderful to be able to have these co-curricular events back on our calendar and offer our Leigh students the range and breath of opportunities that make their time here with us so unique.

In addition, a reminder of the current ‘living with COVID’ guidelines.
Students and staff are no longer required to wear face coverings/masks while in The Leigh Academy, (but are welcome to do so, if they choose). We issued boxes of LFT tests to all students the week before last. Again, there is no longer a requirement to test twice weekly, but families may choose to continue testing. As an academy we are not provided with any more tests and as such will no longer be able to issue these to students.

Finally, I ask families to act with caution and if your child is unwell with COVID like symptoms, then please keep them at home. If a student or member of staff tests positive we are following the current DfE guidance that they stay home for a full 5 days. In all cases do let us know and we will support each student via college/Post-16 Leadership teams.
It would be remiss of me not to mention the current situation in Europe. We are conscious of how unfolding events may be having an impact on our students who may be worried about current events and we are also setting up a donation and collection system to send vital kit to refugees and those affected by war. More details to follow later this week.

Thank you as always for your ongoing support.

Your Sincerely,

Julia Collins
