Events at The Leigh

Three male Leigh Academy students painting together in an Art class.

Dear Parents/Carers,

At The Leigh Academy, we aim to provide a broad curriculum offer which not only delivers academic outcomes but provides all students with a wider school experience. It has been wonderful to see our first cohort of Year 9 students complete the first Duke of Edinburgh practice expedition in many years, well done to them all for not getting too lost and the teachers who gave up their weekend to support them in their adventures through the Kent countryside! This opportunity will be offered to current Year 8 students to sign up in the autumn.

Year 11 and Year 13 students are currently taking their end of Key Stage 4 and 5 examinations with great determination and an impressive attitude to the challenges ahead. Year 11 students will have their leaving events and Prom in Module 6, whilst the Year 13 leaving event is planned for Friday 27th May.

We are also planning ahead to ensure that students in all other year groups have the opportunity to participate in some outside the classroom experiences before the summer break and have the following scheduled:

  • Year 12 trip to the UCAS Exhibition on 9th June
  • Sports Days – Year 7 and 8 Monday 20th June, Year 9 and 10 Tuesday 21st June
  • College Sports Day Monday 4th July
  • Trust Sports Days for qualifying Year 7 and 8s Monday 11th July and Year 9 and 10 on Wednesday 14th July
  • Rewards Trips – for Years 7, 8, 9 and 10 Tuesday 12th July
  • Attenborough (Post-16) College Activity Day on 12th July for Year 12
  • Year 10 Work Experience Week dates Monday 18th July – Friday 22nd July
  • College Activity Week – Year 7, 8, 9 Monday 18th July – Thursday 21st July
  • End of Term 6 for students will be at midday on Thursday 21st July

Please also ‘save the date’ for Year 8 Parent teacher evening on 15th June and Year 7 Parent Teacher evening on 6th July.
Letters for each of the above events will follow with more details closer to each event

Next week we will be celebrating the Queen’s Jubilee, we will have tutor time activities based around fundamental British values. In addition to this our restaurant will be serving traditional British cuisine throughout the week. On Friday 27th May, we will be celebrating the Queen’s Jubilee with a British themed celebration day. Students in Year 7, 8, 9 and 10 will be spending the day with their form group and form tutor participating in a range of

activities on a British values theme. Students are also invited to attend a College picnic on the school field. Each College will come to the field for an hour throughout the day. It will be set up as a ‘street party’ with cakes, crisps, a chocolate bar and juice provided as well as old fashioned games and activities being played. Year 12 students will be able to attend one of the College picnics if they do not have a timetabled lesson.

Students can wear their own clothes – red, white and blue themed if possible and must be clothes that are appropriate for school and games on the field. Students can also bring additional food to add to their picnic if they wish. Students will still be able to purchase food at break time and lunchtime as usual from the restaurant.
We hope that all our students will enjoy the events above and we are excited to be able to hold these events once again that ensure our young people have a fuller experience at The Leigh Academy. We are sure that students will also be able to demonstrate the IB Learner Profile Characteristics of being Communicators by collaborating effectively and Open-minded by appreciating our own cultures, as well as the values and traditions of others.

As you can see we have some exciting times ahead here at The Leigh Academy. We hope you all have a restful half-term break when it arrives.

Your sincerely,

Julia Collins
Principal
