Languages at The Leigh Academy

Three students are seen sat at their desks, wearing art aprons, painting together.

Dear Parents/Carers,

At The Leigh Academy, we are proud that we have been accredited as an IB World School. We have been awarded this title as we deliver the International Baccalaureate Careers-related Programme in our Post 16 giving students a breadth of educational, globally recognised diplomas which students can study alongside A Levels and BTECs if they choose.

We also deliver the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme to students in Key Stage 3 and your son/daughter will have been experiencing the benefit of this internationally-minded education. Research shows that learning a foreign language helps improve self-esteem, develop confidence and better communication skills, as well as ensuring students learn about the world around them. These skills are so important in the global workplace.

We want to ensure that we continue to raise the profile of language learning at The Leigh Academy as our current year 8 students will all continue with their KS3 language learning into their GCSE language studies.

To this end, I am pleased to invite our Year 8 students to experience an international breakfast next week.
Year 8 students will come to The Leigh restaurant and have the opportunity to ask for their breakfast in French/Spanish and in exchange will be given one free item e.g. pastry or cake. Students will also complete a series of cultural activities as part of the IBMYP ethos.

We strongly encourage all students to be open-minded and appreciate other cultures and values and we support all students to be inquirers about culture and languages.

We are in the process of planning trips abroad once again and Mr Hurth, Director of Learning for Modern Foreign Languages will be able to share the details with you soon.

Your sincerely,

Julia Collins
Principal
