Christmas Jumper/Non-Uniform Day and Christmas Lunch – Wednesday 14th December 2022

Two Post-16 students are shown collaborating on some work on a computer with smiles on their faces.

Dear Parents/Carers,

This year The Leigh Academy will be continuing our tradition of supporting charities at Christmas, by holding a staff and student ‘Christmas Jumper Day’. This will coincide with a Christmas lunch from our caterers Cucina. Students are encouraged to wear non-uniform for the day along with their very best ‘festive jumper or Christmas accessories.

This year, the proceeds of the Christmas Jumper Day will go to two charities, Save the Children and Bantabami.

Save the Children was established in the United Kingdom in 1919 to improve the lives of children through better education, health care, and economic opportunities. In recent years, Save the Children has provided invaluable support to many families, helping them to access food vouchers, As well as providing emotional support.

The Bantabami charity supports an AIDS orphanage in South Africa that the academy has been supporting for several years. One eighth of the population of South Africa is either HIV+ or has AIDS and hundreds of thousands of orphans have been created because of this terrible disease. Bantabami is a tiny charity that supports the AIDS orphans of Pietermaritzburg, near Durban, providing food, clothing and other practical support to the orphans, as well as the grannies who look after them. Without our support, the charity would cease operating, so we thank you for the donations you make on Christmas Jumper Day this year, which will enable Bantabami to continue its work in 2023.

It is important that students have all their books and equipment for the day and that they wear appropriate non-academy uniform clothing in addition to any Christmas jumper/accessories.

We ask the students and staff to contribute a minimum of £1.00 for the privilege of wearing their own clothes with their Christmas jumper for the day.

Christmas Lunch

Christmas lunch (which includes the main meal, dessert, drink and a Christmas cracker) will cost students £3.50 and will take place on Wednesday 14th December.

Please find attached the menu here. Students will be asked in tutor time the week before whether they will choose a christmas lunch, so we can give numbers to the kitchen in advance.

Post-16 Christmas Brunch

For our Post-16 students we will be offering a Christmas Brunch.

Friday 16th December – 11:00 to 11:30am

Food Bank Donations

As an IB world school, we believe that service learning provides students with a practical and authentic learning experience. Engaging in services enables students to tackle real life problems through exploration and active involvement. This was why our Year 8 students approached us to investigate food poverty as a problem in our community and came up with a solution to address this issue. During the week of December 5th, Year 8 students will carry out a collection drive of non-perishable items for food banks in Dartford. We are asking all students (if they are able to contribute) to bring donations to the main reception. These could include: canned food, bottled food, cereal, rice, pasta or any consumable products that have a long shelf life. The collection point will be at the academy.

This module will end on Tuesday 20th December at 12:30pm for students.

We thank you in advance for your continued support for our charity fund-raising activities and we hope that all of our community joins in with our festivities.

Yours faithfully,

Julia Collins
