Post-16 Taster Days (for Year 10 students) – 13th & 14th July 2023

Dear Parents/Carers,

As we approach the end of Year 10, it seems incredible that your child is already on the verge of beginning their crucial GCSE examination year. This autumn, they will be making their Post-16 option choices and deciding whether they will remain with us at The Leigh Academy or transfer to another school or college or begin an apprenticeship.

To begin this process with them, we have arranged for all Year 10 students to have the chance to try out the subjects we offer in our Post-16 across Thursday 13th and Friday 14th July. They can choose up to eight different subjects to try out by completing the Google Form we shared via their Year 10 Google Classroom after their assembly today. They will be exploring the huge variety of subjects available in tutor time this week.

We hope that experiencing Post-16 taster lessons will help them to make informed decisions this autumn and excite them about aiming to remain with us for another two years at the end of Year 11, when they will join Attenborough College. The aim is to set students up to be able to make option choices more easily when they attend our Post-16 Open Evening on Wednesday 15th November.

You can view the Post-16 prospectus Year 10 students will be exploring here and encourage you to support them in selecting suitable subjects to try out.

Though students can choose a maximum of eight subjects to try out, they can choose fewer or none at all. Usual timetabled lessons will be running as normal across the two days for all students not attending a taster lesson.

To facilitate the taster lessons, all Year 10 students will follow Post-16 lesson, break and lunch timings on the two taster days:

  • Period 1: 9.00am – 10.00am
  • Period 2: 10.00am – 11.00am
  • BREAK: 11.00am – 11.30am
  • Period 3: 11.30am – 12.30pm
  • Period 4: 12.30pm – 1.30pm
  • LUNCH: 1.30pm – 2.00pm
  • Period 5: 2.00pm – 3.15pm

Year 10 students will then be enjoying work experience week the following week, before starting their summer holiday. Between the taster days and work experience week, we believe we will be providing a balanced end to the year, no matter what each student’s personal preference of Post-16 option may be.

If you have any questions, please contact your child’s form tutor in the first instance.

Yours faithfully,

Mr Lee Forcella-Burton
Director of Post-16, leading Attenborough College
