Year 7 Welcome back and update letter

A young boy is seen wearing his academy uniform and smiling for the camera during a lesson, surrounded by his peers.

Dear Parent/Carer

RE: Year 7 Welcome back and update letter

Wishing you all a very happy new year

We welcomed students back in a Year 7 assembly today

In the assembly,  we asked Year 7 students to reflect on their successful transition from primary school in September through to now, as they have completed a third of their first year in secondary education at The Leigh Academy. We reflected on the positive relationships they have made with their peers and staff. We also spoke about some of the upcoming events for Year 7 students in this module and the year ahead.

Parent/ Teacher Appointments

We are looking forward to meeting you next week on Wednesday 10th January in the  afternoon/evening when you are invited in to meet with your child’s subject teachers. You have had a letter and should be booking appointments through MYCAS. This is an opportunity for you to meet with teachers to find out how your child has settled in, the progress they are making in each subject and how you can support your child in their learning at school and at home.

Curriculum

A reminder that students study a range of subjects in Year 7 including English, Maths, Science, History, Geography, French or Spanish, Religious Studies/Ethics, Art, Drama, Design and Technology, Computing, Music, PE as well as Healthy Minds lessons. These subjects are delivered through the IB MYP – International Baccalaureate Middle Years programme, which aims to prepare students to be successful in school and become active lifelong learners, encouraging students to make practical connections between their studies and the work around them. The IB MYP also embeds the qualities we want our young people to develop as promoted through the IB learner profiles of being:

  • Inquirers
  • Knowledgeable
  • Thinkers
  • Communicators
  • Principled
  • Open-minded
  • Caring
  • Risk-takers
  • Balanced
  • Reflective

Assessment

Through this module students will be having their interim (Mid Year) IB MYP assessments in class and will be tested on the knowledge and skills they have been learning and developing through the year.  Further information about assessment criteria for each subject can be found here. If you have any queries regarding the IBMYP curriculum please contact Sarah McCabe-Knowles sarah.mccabe-knowles@leighacademy.org.uk or your child’s college team.

You will next be updated on your child’s progress in their Interim (mid year) reports which will be published to you on Tuesday 26 March. The final end of year written report will then be published on Tuesday 16th July.

Thank you in advance for your ongoing support as we work in partnership to ensure your child’s success

Kind Regards

Julia Collins | Principal
