Culture Week (week of 22nd May 2023)

Dear Parents/Carers,

As an IB World School, we promote International Mindedness, the development of multicultural awareness and understanding and respect amongst all communities. This year, we are celebrating World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development (Sunday 21st May) and, in so doing, we celebrate the many diverse cultures of the students and staff at The Leigh Academy.

Culture can play a powerful role in supporting the development of the IB Learner Profile attributes, by helping students become more knowledgeable, open-minded, caring and reflective global citizens.

We want to celebrate different cultures that are represented at The Leigh Academy – Learning about culture can help us gain a greater appreciation for the diversity of human experiences and increase our understanding of other cultures.

We want to further promote empathy and respect – we believe that understanding the values, beliefs and practices of all cultures can help us develop empathy, respect and kindness.

Throughout our Culture Week, beginning on Monday 22nd May, we will be focusing on all the inhabited continents. Tutor times will reflect on key pieces of information about different cultures across those continents. Emphasis will be placed on the music, belief systems, sports, food and language of as many cultural representations across the academy as possible.

We are encouraging all students to take part through the above activities, as well as non-uniform day on Friday 26th May. Students and staff have the choice of wearing their own items of cultural dress or dressing in the colours of their national flag.

We look forward to celebrating as a community and deepening students’ understanding of other cultures within our school community, as we continue to develop International Mindedness and respect for all.

Your sincerely,

Julia Collins
Principal
